Aim of unit - think about writing and communications from a meta-perspective. Meta-perspective --> allows theorists and research workers to understand where their work fits into a larger scheme. Meta-thinking - thinking about the way we do something; one of most advanced thinking processes. Significant theme throughout program --> context (con = around -- around the text: 3 f principle --> being context-sensitive (form of writing will display particular shifts in register, word choice/diction and sentence constructions) Sentence constructions --- context, audience, purpose as professional communicator relative to audience --> occurs in 2 main ways: shape of sentences. Simple sentence (made up of one clause: complex sentence (made up of the independent and dependant clause, compound sentence (made up of two main clauses) By varying sentence shapes, begin to manage the dynamics in writing. Syllables = sounds that make up a word. Periodic sentences = dependant clause starts the complex sentence.
