Integumentary system: skin and its derivatives (i. e. hair, nails, sweat glands, oil glands and mammary glands) Protective outer surface overlying basal or pigmented deep layer: no blood vessels or lymphatics. Supplied by arteries that enter its deep surface to form cutaneous plexus. Role in detecting sensation: wandering phagocytic cells. Represented by flat membranous sacs filled w/ keratin. Cytoplasm full of lamellate granules & kerotohyaline granules. Cells contain thick bundles of intermediate filaments made of pre-keratin. Cells are actively mitotic stem cells; some newly formed cells become part of more superficial layers. Forms epidermal ridges: ridges on palms and soles to increase friction, ensuring secure grip. Dermis: dense layer of interlacing collagen and elastic fibres. Provides skin tone and accounts for strength and toughness of skin. Secrete sebum: waxy secretion that coats hair surface. Keratinised structure produced by epithelial cells of the nail root.
