Exercise Prescription for Bone Health & NSLBP
OVERVIEW
Bone health is very important, especially as we age. Exercise can play a
primary role in both preventing osteoporosis and managing the condition,
plus exercise is a major treatment in NSLBP.
OBJECTIVES
• Explore the principles of exercise for enhancing bone health
• Explore the principles of exercise for managing osteoporosis
• Explore the principles of exercise for treating NSLBP.
TUTORIAL QUESTIONS
Q.1 Define Osteopenia
Bone mineral density below average. Generally a precursor to
osteoporosis
T-score between 1-2.5
Q.2 Define Osteoporosis
A disorder which is characterised by LOW bone density → weakness
of bone
> Calcium loss in bones
Less dense → decrease of strength → increase in fractures
T-score <2.5

A disorder which is characterised by low bone density weakness of bone. Less dense decrease of strength increase in fractures. Q. 3 exercise and physical activity is important in enhancing bone accrual or deposition. Page 1 programming and physical activity for an adolescent (16yrs) and elderly (65yrs) client. Brisk walking, jogging, tennis, netball, basketball, dance. While non-weight-bearing exercises (swimming, cycling) promote other health benefits, they do not promote bone growth. Include strength training (or resistance training) is also an important exercise for bone health. Applying resistance to a muscle helps it to develop and maintain muscular strength, endurance and mass.
