Memory
-Emotional memory = memory attached to emotion!
-Declarative memory = things you just know!
-Implicit memory = memory from skills, abilities, procedures!
-Memory is about encoding, storage and retrieval of information!
H.M Case Study!
-Suļ¬€ered severe epileptic seizures focused in left and right medial temporal lobes!
-Had bilateral medial temporal lobectomy performed and removed hippocampus and
amygdala (these two parts of the brain which got removed must be involved with
memory)!
-First and last time this surgery was ever performed because of what happened after!
-Seizures were reduced after surgery as well as no change in IQ or personality ā€”> this is
the positives of the surgery!
-BUT surgery had a large impact on his memory!
ā€¢Has mild retrograde amnesia for 2 years leading up to the surgery!
ā€¢Now also has anterograde amnesia which means he cannot form new memories but
he has a normal short term memory (such as looping)!
-Suggestion in mirror drawing task that he is learning but he cannot recall doing it before
ā€”> same suggestion with incomplete pictures task!
Korsakoļ¬€ā€™s Syndrome!
-Group case study!
-Caused by excessive drinking ā€”> chronic alcoholism!
-Can lead to sensory and motor problems , extreme confusion, personality changes and
in more extreme cases severe explicit anterograde/retrograde amnesia, deļ¬cits in
memory of temporal sequence!
-From group level evidence it is seen that prefrontal cortex damage is responsible for
deļ¬cit in memory of temporal sequence!
N.A Case Study!
-Suggests temporal order memory function is in prefrontal cortex!
-Prefrontal cortex damage shows sequence of event problems and diļ¬ƒculty with doing
self ordered tasks!

Document Summary

Emotional memory = memory attached to emotion. Declarative memory = things you just know. Implicit memory = memory from skills, abilities, procedures. Memory is about encoding, storage and retrieval of information. Su ered severe epileptic seizures focused in left and right medial temporal lobes. Had bilateral medial temporal lobectomy performed and removed hippocampus and amygdala (these two parts of the brain which got removed must be involved with memory) First and last time this surgery was ever performed because of what happened after. Seizures were reduced after surgery as well as no change in iq or personality > this is the positives of the surgery. Suggestion in mirror drawing task that he is learning but he cannot recall doing it before. Caused by excessive drinking > chronic alcoholism. Can lead to sensory and motor problems , extreme confusion, personality changes and in more extreme cases severe explicit anterograde/retrograde amnesia, de cits in memory of temporal sequence.
