IMED2002: Revision Notes 3
Cytokines:
-Important cytokines = make WBC!
-G-CSF: granulocyte-colony stimulating factor!
-GM-CSF: granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor !
= both broader specificity aecting granulocyte production!
eg. IL3: interleukin 3 (broad specificity, act on early SC)
-Cytokines bind to cytokine receptors on relevant cell !
--> downstream signalling to nucleus!
Cytokine receptor signalling:
-Biochemical pathways of cytokines bind to relevant cytokine receptor!
-signalling!
-get through to nucleus!
-transcription/translation!
Monitoring/Measuring:
-Measure GF such as EPO in serum of patient!
-if too low/high = will know why RBCs count is low/high!
Pathway of Hemapoiesis:
-HSC at the top!
-self renewing and driving down pathway to make mature blood cells!
Terminologies:
Normacytic: normal size!
Normochromic: normal colour (stain normal)!
Microcytic: small red cell!
Macrocytic: large red cell!
Schistocyte: fragmented red cell!
Spherocytes: spherical red cell!
Acnthocyte: speculated membrane!
Burn Patients:
-There is heat damage to whole body including blood !
-= heat caused damage!
-RBC membrane burnt !
-= tiny RBC (shrivelled)!
-Has dierent shape and colour!
