Document Summary

Topographic region from which streams receive water flow. Basin size increases with stream size and number. Erosion dominant at top, deposition dominant at bottom. Relationship continues as long as streams have same order join. Water flows in streams from underground, partly from surface runoff. Movement of water on slopes- sheet flow/ rills/gullies. 1. ephemeral dry, carry water immediately during and after rainfall eg. desert area: intermittent- dry part of the year. Wet at other times e. g. during spring snowmelt. Discharge: amt of water passing a cross section of channel at point in time. Laminar: straight streamlines run parallel without mixing or crossing. Turbulent: streamlines mix, cross, form swirls and eddies. Gradient is vertical drop within certain horizontal distance. Erosive ability tied to gradient: corrosion (dissolution) Chemical weathering of minerals and removal of soluble products: corrasion(ablation) Mechanical wearing away from rock by particles: cavitation. Rare, occurs with high velocity eg. waterfalls: hydraulic plucking. Only occurs in very weak or fractured rocks.
