Need for laws against sexual assault & domesic violence. Feminist groups have lost batels in scc for parliament stepped up and made changes to legislaion. Parliament only helped them with laws not social or economic issues because its cheaper. Women"s past history of abuse is why they commit crimes. This was a due process atempt for accused women but it actually resulted in crime- control b/c they would use it to get plea bargains for lesser sentence. They stay because of psychological pathology that is known as learned helplessness . They believe there is no other opion- fear of taking any help ofered. Self- defence provisions then & now: v. lavallee= shot husband when we was walking away. Scc- said the expert was relevant and could help jury understand what a women in abusive relaionship would determine reasonable in accordance with s. 34 (2) a&b.
