Peter singer: singer was compelled to write this paper because he became dissatisfied with the international response to a famine crisis in india. He argues that in order for this to happen our moral scheme and the way that we take life in our society for granted needs to be altered. Even though pulling the child out will result in your clothes getting wet and muddy you are still morally obligated to do it as this is insignificant while the death of the child would be a very bad thing. Singer argues this by saying that it makes no moral difference whether the person that can be helped is nearby, or part of a distant society. He also claims that the way technology has enabled us to be aware of what the problems are around the world should eliminate this tendency.
