Emerged in the mid-20th century with the udhr, followed by other hr covenants. Response to the horrors of 20th century wars/genocides. Derived from natural rights literature in 18th century. Today hr are a significant force in world affairs. Hr are part of a social, political, movement. The goal here is to make the world a better place. The goal is to understand the nature of hr. Truth us the overriding goal of the inquiry. Many different subjects are involved in the study of hr: political science, law, history, sociology, (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374)(cid:859)s studies, philosophy . To some extent they have different interests and goals. Not really universal, a form of western imperialism. Midterm: 30% (cid:858)(cid:859)one week or so before the midterm a list of questions will be posted on culearn; some of these will then be selected (by me) for stude(cid:374)ts to a(cid:374)s(cid:449)er o(cid:374) the (cid:373)idter(cid:373).
