The sequence of age related changes as a person progresses from conception to death. What is happening during the process of prenatal development. Development starts with conception fertilization and creation of zygote(cell formed by sperm and egg) Prenatal period: time between conception and birth (9 months) Zygote cells start multiplying and attach itself to uterine wall. Placenta: allow oxygen and nutrients to pass from mother to fetus. Organs and systems start forming, 2. 5cm long embryo, arms/legs form, most miscarriages happen at this period. Rapid body growth(muscles/bones/sex organs/brain cells/digestive + respiratory system), fetus can move. Age of variability: when baby can survive if premature birth were to happen (22- 26 weeks ) Teratogens: external things (drugs, virus) that can harm embryo/fetus. Impact depends on drug, dose, and phase of development (cocaine=birth and cognitive deficit, heroin=early death) Fetal alcohol syndrome: problems because of too much alcohol during pregnancy (microcephaly, heart defect, delayed mental/motor development)
