Social facts: external forces that coerce us into certain behaviours and beliefs. According to durkhiem, society is an empirical object which we can experience and (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h has o(cid:271)ser(cid:448)a(cid:271)le effe(cid:272)t o(cid:374) us (cid:894)it does(cid:374)(cid:859)t depe(cid:374)d o(cid:374) us to e(cid:454)ist(cid:895). Society is a unique type of entity that is more than just a sum of individuals, it has its own rules of functioning and its own effects. Social facts are not a product of human individuals and what they do products of functioning of social organism itself. Social facts differ from scientific facts, because even though durkheim attempts to observe society empirically, it is impossible to operationalize society since it always changing. Collective consciousness: shared cultural norms, beliefs, and sentiments that tie us together. Durkheim states that human nature is self-centered with unlimited desires, therefore collective consciousness is used to keep those desires in check and curb self-centered tendencies.
