Sociology: the systematic study of society & social interaction. Criticizes society itself using critique (a type of analysis & type of assessment) Way of looking at something rather than simply offering opinion. Looks at forms of inequalities in society & analyzes it. Karl marx and his critique of capitalism: capitalism = the engine causing change in society (from agricultural to modern & industrial, assessed that capitalism = revolutionary but produces undesirable effects (economic inequalities) Dorothy smith and her critique of gender relations: forms of domination in relation to genders, critiquing how our present set-up creates inequalities between men & women. Argues that if you really want to understand social problems, you must take 3 factors into account: history of society. Every society has a history that has shaped them = distinguishes sociology from other sciences: biography. Everyone makes their own decisions: social structure. Particular in a particular moment in time.
