Week 2: lecture 1: what is sociology (sept, 13th, 2016) A dictionary defines sociology as the systematic study of society and social interaction. The word sociology is derived from the latin word socius (companion) and the greek word logos (speech or reason), which together mean reasoned speech about companionship . His study of suicide: to demonstrate" that there is a preexisting social reality that must be accounted for. Social facts external" to the individual. Altruistic: over-integration e. g. dying for a cause- social ties are very strong - duty. Egoistic: the more integrated an individual is into a society/group the less likelihood of suicide- egoistic suicide means social ties (solidarity) are weaker. Anomic: not about integration but regulation- loosely regulated social norms of behavior. Fatalistic : over regulation to the point of fatalism. Week 2: lecture 2: what is sociology cont"d (sept, 15th 2016) 4 different types of suicide: altruistic, egoistic, fatalistic, anomic.
