Lecture 1
SOC 2005
May 08, 2018
Important concepts that should be noted in the course are
Racism
Eurocentrism Samir Amin (how the west appropriate figures to their own image
“Jesus”).
Ethnocentrism
Orientalism
Polycentrism
Classical sociology is neither western nor eastern, and it didn’t not start in the 19th century, it
existed hundreds of years ago all over the world. it could be argued that before the 19th century
the disciplinary was not divided, however, the general notion that was used from the 19th century
and backwards, there was philosophy, thinking about sociology, the market, the economy,
politics. Philosophers could include everything. Some philosophers would call Marx an
economist, some would call him a sociologist, some would refer to him a political economist.
Colonialism was attached with the growth of capitalism.
Racism
There is no general consensus on the origins of racism, the concept that is racism is
related to the emerges and the development of private property, it has different meanings
and different interpretations. In some debates racism is presented as another form of
ethnocentrism. That is viewing another race and other ethnicity from one’s own ethnic
lens. When viewed as a form of ethnocentrism, without involving structure of power, and
relations of superior inferior, racism becomes a mode of differentiation. The concept
racism had gone through many developments, it has been used differently and it changed
drastically. Samir Amir talks about the change and the sociological reasons such as blood
type physical difference, marks skin color as reasons or justification used for racial
discrimination in the west. While most of these theories that are based on skin colors has
been debunked, they have not all together vanished. Even race is also rejected today,
there is no such thing as pure race (it has been mixed together) there is also Semitic race.
Scientific term of racism is an expression of relations of power between two social
groups. it is an ideological construct, which presents the accuser as the superior while
presents the victim as an inferior subject. In this sense, racism is not an absolute
construct, it is rather serves as a political project to legitimate the economic gains of the
colonizer and to demonstrate his or her powers. Racism has been legitimatized in the
actual capital gains, these gains has been expressed in terms of controlling cheap labor
and material, it was also used to indentured labor either to exploit commodity and cheap
labor.
Racism stigmatizes the difference between the west and the east. in order to justify unfair
advantage of the abuse of power in terms of economic, culture and now military. It is in
this sense racism entails the power elations is different from ethnocentrism. There is a
dialectical relation between racism and colonialism, racism has always been an ally to
colonialism, it can be used as foundational grounds for colonialism reinforcing it while
being enhanced by it. By defining racism as an expression of power relation, it is safe to
say that racism doesn’t only exist in western society, it could be talked about in “Sudan”
it is the power that allowed racism to divide Sudan to two parts.
