Theorizing the archive: following the professionalization of historical scholarship in the 19th century, archival records enjoyed an almost un disputed authority. Fruin was the first full dutch professor of history in the netherlands, specialised in political history. And there was a large advocate of impartial and non-religious history (is important in the netherlands of that time 19th century: protestants and catholics had their own pillar wanted to write an overarching history). And that obvious played off on his students. One of his students block he was massively influential in turning history in an empirical science (at least in the netherlands), so it is impartial and objective. So they are followers of ranke, they are very much based on sources. But van ranke mainly studied political history, so state archives: describe the ideal concept of the professional historian as envisioned at the time. The identity of the professional historians had to become synonomus and rational, personal, singular, male authorship.
