From thinking animals to behaviourism: making a science of. Herbert spencer (1820-1903) integrated darwin"s ideas into his own, claiming evolution had a direction and an equilibrium endpoint. Adopted the same idea as lamarck; organisms could pass on newly learned skills to offspring. As a result of darwin and spencer"s writings many learned individuals became interested in animal behaviour. They looked for similarities between human and animal behaviour to place different species on the evolution scale. Early research: trying to understand the animal"s mind. The evidence gathered was anecdotal and based on interpretation of underlying reasoning . George romanes (1848-1894) combined observations of behaviour w/ inference of the animals" adaptive qualities anthropomorphic interpretation= interpreting behaviour of non- human living creatures by attributing human motives and human-like intelligence to them. Mechanomorphism= attributing mechanical properties to psychological phenomena. Theriomorphism= the attribution of non-human properties to humans.
