Introduction: what is it that we are doing when we study history, not just memorization of facts, context - putting books,people and culture into context about certain moments and events. Way we understand the world, is culturally constructed. Canada war with germany - september 11, 1939. For the russian the ww2 started in 1941 when the nazis attacked the soviet. Us the war does not start until 1941 when they are attacked by the japanese. China vs japan - war starts in 1937. Dating of events depends on person, arbitrary date. How we date events: calendric systems, bc/ad, bce/ce, hebrew calendar - current year: 5776, chinese calendar no comparable to western versions. Measure time by systems that we have created. Value of history: cogent questions, preoccupation of our own times, appropriate use and analysis of evidence, importance of context, relations between objectivity and subjectivity, difference between opinion and substantiated interpretation.
