Document Summary

Culture, religion, and societal norms have drastic impacts on our life. Specifically, these things play a crucial role in the realm of mental illness; these things change, and our perceptions of mental illness change as well. Our perceptions also vary culture to culture, with western views of mental illness varying from more traditional or spiritual views of it. Within these changes in perception, we have seen large changes in the diagnosis of mental illness, treatment of individuals, research and development of mental disorders. One example of how culture and societal norms has impacted our perception of mental illness is in the diagnosis of mental illnesses. Specifically, we can look at views of a person hearing voices in the western culture versus more traditional cultures. In the western culture, this symptom is seen as being a sign of a problem, thus allowing individuals to be properly diagnosed and treated.
