Importance of Health Promotion Notes
Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to
improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards assuring
a social, physical, and policy environment that promotes health.
The health promotion program has to deal with the common life of communities, and it
tries to influence the determinants or main causes of bad health.
Community itself should be sure aware that choosing good health, life styles and healthy
life habits is necessary to avoid the risk of individual and environmental pollution.
Health issues can be effectively addressed by adopting a holistic approach by
empowering individuals and communities to take action for their health, fostering
leadership for public health, promoting intersectional action to build healthy public
policies in all sectors and creating sustainable health systems.
Importance in Nursing
Nurses play an important role in promoting public health. Traditionally, the focus of
health promotion by nurses has been on disease prevention and changing the behaviour of
individuals with respect to their health.
Nurses consider health promotion important, but a number of obstacles associated with
organizational culture prevent effective delivery.
As a key member of the health care team, the nurse has an important role to play in health
promotion and related activities.
Nurses, particularly community and public health nurses, recognize that promoting
wellness and healthy lifestyles are key to eliminating the unequal burden of disease
experienced by poor and other underserved populations.
