We are motivated by 2 elements: pain and pleasure. Determines what we ought to do and what we shall do. Utility: production of benefit, advantage, pleasure, good, or happiness or what prevents happening of pain, evil, or unhappiness to the party whose interest is considered. It is a "free-floating" object (good as long as its generated) Probability: uncertain -> cannot be certain of actual outcome/consequences. Likely consequences of action -> we should carry out certain actions but consequences aren"t certain. Communities: collections of individuals; making individuals the focus of concern.
