Document Summary

At different times and in different cultures, homosexual behaviour has been variously approved of, tolerated, punished, and banned. Glasbeek addresses the question of sexuality and moral regulation by focusing on the creation of homosexuality as social problem. On the other hand, hunt addresses the question of sexuality and moral regulation by focusing on how sexual purity led to social hygiene. In this regard, hunt is taking a closer look by focusing on the regulation, social control and paternalism and surveillance. This paper seeks to compare and contrast hunt and glasbeek"s pieces in regards to addressing the question of sexuality and moral regulation, and will argue that hunt"s piece is more effective in addressing the question. Hunt argues the social hygiene movement arose from concerns over class, immigration, urbanization and resulting health conditions, and the need for healthy soldiers in world war i. However, these concerns were not enough to create a movement by themselves.
