They were not very sound as a method of diagnosing/evaluating a new patient. There was a higher accuracy when used in conjunction with knowledge of the patient from previous visits. His theory was that most brain activity was in people"s subconscious and as a result he liked to use dreams and such to try and understand people"s minds. Part of why people believed these were accurate was because many people used. Barnum statements are vague blanket statements that can apply to most people depending on how they are interpreted. Hippocrates developed a theory of personalities which included 4 types: the sanguine, the choleric, the melancholic, and the phlegmatic. While he was fairly accurate in his ability to categorize personalities he was inaccurate in his ideas of what caused them. His belief was that they were caused by excess levels of certain substances (blood, yellow bile, black bile, . ) in the body.
