Discussions about individuals , populations , species , families , and so on can be rather confusing if you have not put these terms in their proper context. Specifically, it is important to recognize that these are organized in a nested hierarchy: one fits within the next, not unlike those russian dolls where inside each one is another, smaller one. The system that biologists use to classify species reflects this nested hierarchy. As one moves up the hierarchy, the categories become more general and include more and more lower- level categories. That room is one of several in your house. Your house is one of many in your neighbourhood. Your neighbourhood is one of many in your city. Your city is one of many in your province, and so on through your nation (canada), continent (north america), planet (earth), solar system (sol system), galaxy (milky way), and ultimately the universe.
