Ecology: the environmental influences organism & organisms influence the environments. The fact that we are breathing oxygen (generated mostly by the process of photosynthesis) is a rather striking example of the power of organisms to influence the environment. Environmental science- the study of a mans effect on the natural system. Resource management : wildlife, fisheries, soil resources, forestry. Ecology is a process, not just the knowledge it generates. Science is limited by the ability of scientists to collect & interpret data. New technology makes it possible for science to correct misinterpreted data. Models are simplified representations of real systems & can be used to estimate & predict. Response to temperature individuals, age of individuals, factors causing distribution and age structure. How do organisms of different species interact with abiotic factors. Population ecology: understand what maintains diversity (causes/consequences) Ecosystem ecology: understand system function (mass flows of energy/materials- how it affects stoichiometry- balance of life) ecosystem components.
