Alkoid that stimulates the central nervous system. Most wildly used psychoactive drug in the world. Native to ethiopia originally grown in africa. Used because it was a part of arabian political and social culture. Comes from three species (coffea arabica) robusta. Alkaloid is structurally similar to adenosine to a chemical found in the brain that leads to sedation. Two theories for the term coffee: from ethiopia area kaffa, from kahveh or qahwah believed to mean stimulating. Coffea arabica is the original coffee native to highlands of ethopia. Coffea canephora is native to the hotter wetter lowlands of west africa. Best growth occurs under the shades of forest trees. Fruit is commonly referred to as a cherry accurate botanical description = accessory berry. African tribes crushed ripe berries mixed with animal. First enjoyed as wine made from fermented juice of ripe berries. Arab cultures learned to boil coffee an became hot drink around 1200 ad.
