Meiji intellectual who sought to predict what was coming or happening to the meiji during the restoration of japan in order to push modernity. 1862: travelled to europe to analyze the european state to which he was amazed. He believed that if japan [was] to survive, [they] must leave asia due to the opium problem within canton and the qing dynasty based in confucian values. Stressed the encouragement of learning and equality within education. Choson (korean) emperor reigning at the height of the qing empire"s power. Considered to be the perfect confucian ruler (i. e. giving up rule so as to not rule longer than his grandfather; no taxes for the people of the empire) Interested in literature treasuries and conducted a literary inquisition due to his search for disparaging texts on the manchurians (i. e. censorship) Wanted the british out of china in the late 18th century during the macartney mission (1793)
