Identify common pitfalls for the student of popular music. Identify four broad angles of inquiry that will recur in each chapter of the book. The four angles of inquiry that the textbook discusses are: Identify the component parts of the popularity arc. The core components of popularity arc are that it starts in a restricted geographical area (or subculture), and then spreads to the commercial mainstream, and then eventually reverts to a restricted geographical area (or subculture) again. Creates a foundation for other band members; establishes the temp, meter, and feel of the song. The bass player provides chord progression; they"re bridge between rhythm and harmonic. The rhythm guitarist provides the foundational harmony, by playing full chords. Instruments: electric/acoustic guitar; keyboards may also be used. Artists use the horns and strings to add the finishing touches to a track; they add elegance. Can be added to sweeten a track. The singer focuses on the melody with backup harmony vocals.
