Document Summary

Note: b and t-lymphocytes are part of the adaptive immune system. ~ we are always infected (commensal get flora) but not always diseased. Immunology - the immune system protects the host from infectious disease. Infection: presence of an organism (infectious agent) in or on another organism (host) Pathogen: organism which causes disease composed of many different antigens. Antigen: general term for foreign material that can be specifically recognized by b or t-lymphocytes. 4 types of antigens: virus, parasite, bacterium, fungus. All have there own mechanism to harm the host but are all recognized by the immune system. Non-antigen specific host defenses that exist prior to exposure to an antigen &involve anatomic, physiologic, endocytic and phagocytic, anti-microbial and inflammatory mechanisms, & which exhibit no adaption or memory characteristics . Adaptive immunity - host defenses that are mediated by b cells and t cells following exposure to antigen that exhibits specificity, diversity, memory and self non-self discrimination .
