Document Summary

Modules 20-22: classical conditioning: learning to link 2 stimuli in a way that helps us anticipate an event to which we have a reaction. One of 2 types of associative learning. After repeated exposure to 2 stimuli occurring in sequence, we associate those stimuli with each other. Result: our natural response to ne stimuli is now triggered by the new, predictive stimuli. Ex: see lightning (stimuli 1), hear thunder (stimuli 2); after repetition, we learn to cover our ears after lightning to avoid sound of thunder: operant conditioning: changing behavior choices in response to consequences. We learn to associate our response (behavior) with consequences. Result: we learn to repeat behaviors that were followed by good results and to avoid behaviors that were followed by bad results. Example: child learns (cid:494)please(cid:495) (cid:523)response(cid:524)=cookies(cid:523)good consequence(cid:524) and grabbing the cookie (response)=scolding and no cookie (bad consequence: cognitive learning: acquiring new behaviors and information through observation and information, rather than by direct experience.
