Statements made by social scientists are empirical; meaning they are based on systematic collection and analysis of data, where data are the information collected through formal observation or measurement. Behavioural scientists believe in the value of scienti c research to answer questions about human behaviour. The tendency to think that we could have predicted something that we probably could now have predicted is called hindsight bias. Scienti c method: set of assumption, rules and procedures scientists use to conduct research. It demands research to be objective; free from personal bias, or emotion. Values: are personal statements such as i will go to heaven when i die . Facts: objective statements determined to be accurate through empirical study. Ex: there were over 16,000 homicides in the usa in 2002. Research report: document that presents scienti c ndings using a standardized written formula (usually apa).
