Ethnomethodology is an approach in sociology based on the belief that you can discover the normal social order of a society by disrupting it. Ethnomethodologists explore the question of how people account for their behaviours. To answer this question, they may deliberately disrupt social norms to see how people respond, and how they try to restore social order. Ethnomethodology breaching experiments are planned and deliberate breaks of a commonly accepted social norm. The reaction to the breach is the crucial part of the experiment. If a breach is done correctly and the social norm is compromised, the reaction that people exhibit is the mechanism by which they try to make sense of the odd behaviour or how they combat the behaviour.
