SOCIOL 2S06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Gail Jefferson, Conversation Analysis, Ethnomethodology
Document Summary
The reactions: astonishment, bewilderment, shock, anxiety, embarrassment, anger, - these reactions demonstrate how important it is for us to act in accordance to socially accepted assumption about how we are to behave in certain social settings. Parents sought ways to cope with the behaviour of their children, demanded explanations by asking: if they were sick, if they had been fired, etc. The parents were trying to rationalize the odd behaviour and attempted to try to make sense of the behaviour with things they understood, such as their children being sick, or them being fired, etc. The aftermath: the students did not disclose why they were acting oddly, so the parents ended up withdrawing from the students", and even isolate or denounce them. The students eventually disclosed they acted oddly for an experiment. Harmony was usually restored between the family and the students. However, hard feelings remained in some instances.
