The traditional nuclear family is the primary unit where sexual relations and socialization happens. Relationships within the family are unique and different from those outside the family. There is a deep + mandatory bond between mom and baby in the early years. Property, status, and positions are passed down along the family. There is considerable interdependence within men and women in the family. Biological between man and woman, but the roles of men and women differ. Conception: across societies, are rare and socially determined. Kids born of different dads but same mom are not related. Trobriand: sex between kids of one dad but different moms is okay, sex with women with the same mother, or whose moms are siblings = taboo. Lakker of burma: kids with the same mom are not related so it"s not incest. Western societies= parents are who raises a child. Melanesia + polynesia: kids are adopted just after weaning.
