4 basic ways of knowing: experience, research, senses, communication with others. The scientific method: hypothesis, a relationship between two variables, prediction, a statement about the direction of a relationship proposed by a hypothesis, positively or negatively correlated, test, a methodology designed to falsify your hypothesis, repeat. A scientist should be willing to accept an alternative explanation for their findings if the initial reasoning is proven false. Aristotle: proposed that decaying material could be recycled and transformed into living animals by spontaneous action. Louis pasteur: used the scientific method to prove that life could not be spontaneously generated. Took almost a century to be born: joseph grinnell: was the first to speak about competitive exclusion. Competitive exclusion: a principle that says that when two species are in the same ecosystem and compete for the same resources, they cannot coexist: georgy gause: grew paramecium for observation, david lack: finches in the galapagos islands.
