Objectivism: emphasizes the assumption that there is something inherent in the person, behaviour or characteristic that is deviant, statistical rarity, harm. If a behaviour is not typical, it is deviant. If an action causes harm, it is deviant: societal reaction. Institutional level: the structures of our society (government, education) affect social construction. Interactional level: interactions with others influence the way we think about others and determines the role that each of us play in social construction. Individual level: our own identities, concepts of self affect the path of social construction. Increases social solidarity brings those of us together to fight back against those who break the rules: society determines what its moral boundaries are through observing behaviour, we develop opinions on what is acceptable and unacceptable. Differential association theory: sutherland deviant behaviour is learned through the same process by which conforming behaviour is learned, direct interaction and communication in small intimate groups is crucial (intimacy is important!)
