Three cases: reena virk case (1997): a canadian case, 14 year old was found dead by a river, death by drowning, killers were not strangers to the victim, they were her peers. 6 other girls were also charged with assault: columbine high school (1999): two youth who were bullied went and shot up the school, 12 students died, gunmen turned the guns on themselves: stefanie rengel murder case (2008): killed by her peers (15 & 17). This case is unusual because all 4 of her parents were police of cers, her boyfriend killed her. Youth are portrayed as violent, irresponsible, engaging in deviance, unemployed, lazy. Creates a sense of panic in the public. There is a generational difference in values and belief systems. Misconceptions due to experts claiming that youth crime is increasing. Stories about youth crime are evergreen they will always be sensationalized. Youth are deemed as at risk for deviant behaviour due to poverty, broken homes etc.
