Who is rene descartes: he was a french philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. Descartes has been acclaimed the first modern philosopher. Descartes in the garden: rene descartes described stimuli and response by walking in a garden. In the garden there was pressure plates and the pressure plate would cause water to spray out of the ground. This described stimuli and response, and they came up with the idea that animals are different than humans because of their mind. Man is unique because he possesses a mind. Rationalism: a belief or theory that opinions and actions should be based on reason and knowledge rather than on religious belief or emotional response. Dualism: the belief that mind is separate from matter. The mind controls the movement of the body and the body provided the mind with information about the environment: took place in the pineal gland.
