Those who experience strain more often and for a longer duration generally come from the lower economic rungs of society: strain can result in one of 5 adaptions: conformity, ritualism, rebellion, retreatism, and innovation. Conformists most typical, just conforming to the norm. Ritualists have learned that reaching this goal is unlikely but play by the rules. Rebels don"t care about the cultural goals or the accepted means, they make new goals and new ways to make them. Retreatists drop out of life, generally the drug addicts, alcoholics, etc. Innovation accept the cultural goal but not the accepted means, such as a thief. Group of similarly frustrated adolescents come together and begin to tentatively experiment with alternative standards for status. A process of alienation serves to direct strained adolescents toward delinquency and interaction with other delinquents.
