Social psychology: the study of how the individual is influenced by the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of other people. Inducing a change in attitude is persuasion: social influence: area that investigates the causes of human change, compliance. Inducing a change in belief is education or propaganda: how we get people to do things. Informational conformity- going along with group b/c what they say convinces us they are right: normative conformity- we conform because we believe the group with disapprove if they think of us as deviant. This is more of a self focus, we want to follow the norm and be liked: agentic state theory- obedience involves a critical shift in viewpoint. Psychological disorders- 20% of canadians will experience a mental illness. 8% will experience depress; youth mental illness one the increase: stigma, perception of society that those with mental health disorders are weak and inferior.
