Document Summary

Canada is not a direct democracy but a representative democracy. Central democratic mechanism of our regime is elections. Every citizen of canada has a right to vote in an election of members of the house of commons or a legislative assembly and to be qualified for membership therein . Democratic theory-three main concepts of representation: delegates-spokespersons who faithfully transmit the views of the majority of people who elect them, trustees- people whom we entrust. Representatives are elected for their judgment and character and are free to decide for themselves how to vote on each issue: party member- be loyal supporters of the policies advocated by their party. Canada"s approach to representation is a mixture of three but puts heavy emphasis on the party member theory. Floor crossing - when an elected mp decides to switch parties in the house of commons.
