Subcultural Theory
Know Cohen subcultural Theory and cloward and Ohlin’s differential opportunity theory of
subcultures and the concepts associated with them.
Cohen:
Societies like to achieve the same goals, and the goals in this case are to receive status. Status is
much easier for higher class people because they have more education, opportunities etc. they are
more available to them compared to lower class people. when the lower class people cannot gain
this status, they rebel against the middle and higher class people. They create new values and
norms and thus create a subculture
Cloward and Ohlin’s:
Just as there are sets of legitimate means to achieve goals, there are illegitimate means as well
and this is the basis of the differential opportunity theory. People want to achieve their goals.
where lower class people have not many opportunities, they can find a different means to achieve
their goal
Be sure you can explain how these theories are associated with other criminological theories we

Make sure you can explain what postmodernism means... What is complexity / Chaos Theory?
Postmodernism emerged as a literary, philosophical and architectural movement in Europe after
WW1. It suggests that there are negative side effects of science. Scientific objectivity is
impossible and senses aren’t always reliable.
Chaos/Complexity theory suggests that complex systems (like humans) and their behaviour
cannot be understood without hundreds (or thousands) of variables. Derived from physics theory.
Make sure you understand the level of explanation these theories are operating on what they're
trying to explain.
