Document Summary

Figure 1 remember that intra=inside and inter=outside forces. Intermolecular bonds from strongest to weakest (1) ionic bonds=> the strongest intermolecular bond that can be formed. Ionic means that there is a complete transfer of valence electrons between atoms. A metal becomes a cation (positively charged because it loses its electrons) and a nonmetal becomes an anion (negatively charged because it accepts the electrons). An example of this kind of bond would be nacl or sodium chloride. The chlorine atom has a total of 17 electrons; because of this the outermost valence shell would have 7 electrons and the atom would need one more electron to become a stable atom and achieve an octet. Therefore, the chlorine atom gains the electron and becomes the negatively charged atom (2) covalent (or molecular) bond=> a bond that involves the sharing of electrons between atoms. An example of this bond would be hcl or hydrochloric acid.
