Document Summary

Chapter 9: recognizing use, misuse, abuse, and addiction to drugs/behaviours. Many canadians struggle with compulsive and harmful behaviours. The effects of these behaviours are likely to extend to families, friends, and communities. Drug use is simply taking a drug in the way that it was intended. Drug abuse is defined as the excessive use of a drug. However, excessive use is a difficult measurement to quantify since various factors must be taken into consideration (sex, body size, medical conditions) Drug abuse may be defined according to the motivations behind taking the drug. Drug misuse is using a drug in a way that it was not intended (for example, taking a friend"s prescription painkiller for your own symptoms) This is considered drug misuse since the drug was not intended for you. However, many individuals may abuse and misuse prescription, over-the-counter, and legal substances (tobacco, coffee, herbal preparations) Individuals differ in how they respond to drugs and behaviours that are potentially addictive.
