Recap: concept: an idea expressed as a symbol or in words (e. g. , poverty, racism, intelligence, how we measure concepts varies between qn and ql researchers. Quantitative measurement: much more concerned about details surrounding measurement, measurement protocols determined well before actual data collection, deductive approach begins with concept, moves to developing precise measures to capture that concept in numerical form. Qualitative measurement: develop ways to capture and express concepts using various alternatives to numbers. Inductive approach measures features of social life as part of a process that mixes concept and theory development with measurement. There are no objectively correct ways to operationalize many concepts! Debates around measurement of concepts e. g. , intelligence, low-income cutoff rate. Stanford binet intelligence test standard iq test debate about these tests because of analytical reasoning you can"t say you"re not smart because you don"t do well on the iq test.
