Document Summary

Participant observation: a method used by anthropologists to learn about a people and their activities by observing at the same time as participating in their lives. Ethnography: literally writings about a particular ethnic group of people, the descriptive part of what anthropologists provide in their reports of field work. The term is also used in other disciplines to describe research methods that resemble those of anthropologists; rosaldo notes the ethnographer must always be aware of the bias and culture in diversity. Why outsiders (immigrants, ethnic/sexual/religious minorities, uncool people, etc. ) make good anthropologists: outsiders often make good anthropologists because they are not familiar with the culture being observed in any way. This lets them observe from a neutral third party standpoint, without any preconceptions. If someone from canada were to observe culture at a city in germany, then there would be many preconceptions about what people do. Patrilineal: those in the same generation, but related through the father.
