Same sex competition to gain access to fertile females. Compete with members of the same sex to attract mates. Sexual ornaments and courtship rituals as indicators of genetic quality and/or ability to provide resources for offspring. Tends to be more confrontational & intense than females: male fitness depends on maximizing mating frequency, male reproduction is limited not by their own physiology but by the behavior of other males.
