Migration west: a combination of diverse issues led to a large-scale migration of farmers from the east to the west coast including, environmental circumstances. Use of farm machinery which displaced tenant farmers: the migrant experience as discussed and portrayed in the book and film, was also discussed and articulated by other artists, ex. Dorothea lange portrayed photography of the time: the film itself created artistic inspiration for artists, woody guthrie"s ballad tom joad , bruce springsteen"s the ghost of tom joad . The journey: the story we"re about to see follows the fictional joad family who are tenant farmers in. Grandma joad and muley graves: the critique of big business and progress , the tension between the individual and the broader community. At the same time, we see tremendous examples of sharing and of compassion. Muley graves: tom joad wants to know who to blame for the devastation of the farmhouse and asks muley.
