Document Summary

Iron core + less dense matter outer. Proportions of fe and mh differ from earth"s mantle. Differentiated into 4 primary layers (and others) Meteorite impacts increased concentrations of some elements in upper earth. Rocky, less dense and cooler than core. Uppermost portion is part of the lithosphere - behaves elastically, mid-upper portion below the lithospheric part is asthenosphere - viscous, low density and behaves plastically. Continental : thicker, less dense, rich in silicate minerals. Vs oceanic : thinner, more dense, rich in mg and fe. Also part of the lithosphere (crust + upper mantle) Divided up into plates, some of which include continents. Deep marine sediments also accreted to continent, forming wedges btw continental masses. Tectonics : movement of earth"s crust and large-scale rock deformation. Deformation: rocks can bend and flow under stress. Increased folding -> overturned fold -> which can break = fault. Faults : where rocks break and move on a large scale.
