Document Summary

Forest invasions about 1/3 of plants in the gta are introduced, mostly from europe. Most plant invaders are in disturbed areas (urban areas, fields, etc. ) Forest historically have been rather resistant to invasions but there are a number of notable exceptions including insects, other animals, diseases, and plants. Biennial; 1 year as a rosette, then flowers and dies in second year. Reaches very high densities in forests especially disturbed forest, can dominate forest floor. In europe, attacked by a variety of insects but very few enemies in north. Cabbage white butterflies lay eggs on it but larvae don"t survive. Including both wildflowers and tree seedlings (not adult trees) Increasing garlic mustard leads to declining native diversity. Has negative effects on most understory plants. May be several mechanisms for these impacts, including competition for light, nutrients. Explanation is believed (at least in part) to be allelopathy (competition by the production of toxic chemicals)
