Textbook:
The Strategic Role of Human Resources Management
Human resources management is the management of people in organizations to drive successful
organizational performance and achievement of the organizations strategic goals. The goal of HRM is to
ensure that the organization finds and hires the best individuals available, develops their talent, creates a
productive work environment, and continually builds and monitors these human assets.
Human capital is the knowledge, education, training, skills, and expertise of an organizations workforce.
Human Resource Management Responsibilities:
HRM responsibilities and activities fall into 2 categories. The first is the traditional operational
(administrative) category, where HR professionals hire and maintain employees and then manage
employee separations. The second is the more recent strategic category, where HR is focused on ensuring
that the organization is staffed with the most effective human capital to achieve its strategic goals.
Operational Responsibilities :
oEvery line manager has responsibilities related to employees as they move through the
stages of the human-capital life cycle: selection and assimilation into the organization,
development of capabilities while working in the organization, and transition out of the
organization.
oServices that is provided by the HR professionals to the company:
Analyzing jobs
Planning future workforce requirements
Selecting employees
Orienting and training employees
Managing compensation and reward plans
Communicating with employees (including counselling and disciplining)
oOutsourcing, the practice of contracting with outside vendors to handle specified
functions on a permanent basis, had grown very popular over the years in the HR
department.
